Celebrating National School Breakfast Week

Celebrating National School Breakfast Week

National School Breakfast Week is March 4-8. In Osseo Area Schools, the dedicated nutrition services workers work each day to provide students with nutritious and delicious breakfasts, free to all students. Around 300-400 students eat breakfast at each site every day.

At Maple Grove Senior High School (MGSH), students grab their breakfast and gather in the cafeteria to eat before heading to class. The variety of options offered, from a hot breakfast sandwich to a cereal bar, ensures that the students get what they need to start their day,

“I think the importance of a school breakfast is that they get a well balanced breakfast in the morning to help them learn during the day,” said Kelly Shober, kitchen manager at MGSH.

Students at Brooklyn Middle STEAM School (BMS) enjoy the hot breakfasts of pancakes, hot chicken biscuit sandwiches and mini donuts. They always make sure to get breakfast when it is one of their favorite items.

“School breakfast sets the tone for the day. If you come into school hungry, you’re going to be thinking about it. When you get your school breakfast, you get your nourishment, it fills you up for the day and gets you ready for learning,” said Sandy Hirdler, kitchen manager at BMS.

At Edinbrook Elementary School, the students can choose from a variety of items for their breakfast. The kind nutrition services workers and music playing in the kitchen get students ready for their day.

“School breakfast is very important so that the kids can get the energy they need to make it through their day and do lots of learning,” said Ashley Headley, kitchen manager at Edinbrook.

At Oak View Elementary School, a team of three prepares the breakfast for students, making sure they get their balanced breakfast, including a fruit option. The students come in with their classes and leave ready to learn.

The theme for National School Breakfast Week this year is “Surf’s Up With School Breakfast.” Students will receive a bookmark with their breakfast one day of the week. Students eating breakfast will also have the chance to win a “golden ticket” to win a prize!
